Walk: Crosslands, Berowra Valley

Registration essential

Crosslands1Formerly the Benowie Trail and now a section of the Great North Walk, the walk follows tidal Berowra Creek upstream to Rockyfall Rapids, the tidal limit; returning by the same route. The walk is very scenic with forest trees reflected in a serene waterway (if weather calm). Crosslands Reserve itself is a broad, grassed-over river flat in which some large blackbutts, Sydney blue gums and turpentines have survived, but the walk also traverses near-pristine river flat forest, an endangered community. There are groves of dense grey myrtle rainforest. The turnaround point at the rapids is a great place to stop and snack and wander down to the water’s edge.

Date: Sunday 9 June
Time: 8.45 for 9 am start
Length: 6 km
Grade: moderate, gradients mostly gentle but with some short, steep rocky sections, one requring pull-up on rungs; occasional king tide following heavy rains may flood low-lying track sections
Highlights: lyrebird sightings (or hearings) and wallabies are quite common, you might see a sacred kingfisher and the river flat forest is impressive with a diverse range of species
Meet: information sign, Crosslands Reserve
How to get there: take Galston Road in the direction of Galston Gorge and after 2.5 km turn right onto Somerville Road at the traffic lights. Somerville Road seems to go on for ever but after 4 km you will begin the descent to Crosslands Reserve on a narrow, sealed road. The reserve opens out at the bottom and you can park on the left if you’re lucky, otherwise turn right into the main car park.
Bring: your mobile phone mostly as a camera: note that reception in Berowra Valley is poor and patchy for all networks. The walk is very shady, but wear a hat if you need and bring water and snack food and any i.d. books you normally use. It can be very chilly and foggy so bear that in mind re: clothing. Public toilets available at the start.
Leader: John Martyn (0425 830 260)
Limit: 15 walkers
