Talk: All about the Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion

Three members of the Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion Steering Committee will provide a briefing about the current status of the outstanding Ku-ring-gai GeoRegion, one of three approved GeoRegions in Australia.

The Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment Inc (FOKE) has initiated this project with the objective of making a positive contribution to conservation based in and around Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and extending to include the Northern Beaches coastline. This 440 sq km area is located on the northern outskirts of Sydney (and within the area forming part of the former Sydney Harbour National Landscape).

Much of the natural bushland of the GeoRegion has been conserved within six protected areas. The largest being Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park with other protected areas including Muogamarra Nature Reserve, and parts of Berowra Valley National Park, Lane Cove National Park, Garigal National Park and Long Reef Aquatic Reserve. Visitors can discover self-guided trails, learn about ancient rock formations and plan trips to iconic sites, making it a must-visit resource for nature enthusiasts and educators. Stunning vistas and coastal, forest and woodland walks can be explored. Information about the GeoRegion’s geology and landscapes, biodiversity, and Aboriginal cultural history developed over millennia is also available.

Steering Committee Chair, Ursula Bonzol, has been a committee member of FOKE since 2009. She has 35 years experience in the development, marketing and management of major projects.

Bob Conroy has more than 40 years of experience in protected area management in both operational and executive roles, including as Regional Manager of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, a volunteer with the RFS, and a member of WCPA for the IUCN.

Angus M Robinson, an experienced executive, is a long-standing member of FOKE, also the Coordinator of Geotourism Australia, an entity of the Australian Geoscience Council Inc implementing the National Geotourism Strategy, having worked to formally establish geotourism practice within the GSA in 2011.
